Skagway’s origins date to the Tlingit people, who named it Shgagei (“lady in the rock”). Explorers Whidbey and Vancouver charted the Lynn Canal in 1794. William Moore and his son Ben established the homestead that sparked the Klondike Gold Rush boom. By 1898 Skagway became Alaska’s first incorporated city, its streets alive with prospectors and legends like Soapy Smith and Frank Reid. Today over a million visitors explore these same streets each summer.
